Native to Madagascar, Hypoestes phyllostachya is a classic tropical houseplant that is best known for its brightly variegated foliage that resembles polka dots. Leaves are dark green with intense variegation in shades of white, pink, and red. In its native habitat, the plant reaches 30” tall, but many cultivated varieties stay on the smaller side. The plant produces small flowers in ideal conditions towards the end of the summer, which should be pinched off.
Hypoestes plants are easy to care for, as long as they’re given plenty of water and high humidity. They prefer bright, indirect light and can withstand some morning sun. Low light can cause the variegation to fade, and direct afternoon sun can cause the leaves to burn. Misting the leaves or overhead watering is discouraged as the plant is susceptible to powdery mildew.
